Many will be able to guess why this photo is called Patience. I’ve spent years looking at photos just like this one, thinking, “How do people get such beautiful, vibrant, bright, and sharp landscape photos?” It seemed impossible for me to get something like that. I was doing all the right things. My shutter speed was good; I was on a tripod; my aperture was f/12; and my ISO was low. Yet none of my photos were sharp, none of them were interesting, none of them were anything! It was a very frustrating time until I finally learned one thing: contrast. Either way, I intentionally introduced natural contrast into this scene, which completely transformed it.

I spent years waiting for a shot just like this, and now I finally have it. I can’t wait to personally get this hung on my wall because it is just beautiful.

With the sun rising on the side of the horizon, you get this spectacular gradient across the lake, the clouds, and the city. It brings vibrancy to every aspect, yet there is also a separation between each level and the next. From the ship in the lake, to the bridge, and to the bushes in front, there is a contrast that magnifies the scale of the scene. It dramatically introduces Duluth as a city of great variety. Capturing every essential aspect. The large ships, the lift bridge, Canal Park, and on and on.

Border & Presentation Details

All prints are produced edge-to-edge, with no white border, allowing the image to fully occupy the space for a clean, modern presentation.

The only exception is Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth, which includes a 0.79" (20 mm) white border as part of its fine art presentation, enhancing its gallery-style aesthetic.

If you prefer a white border on other materials, this can be achieved through custom framing using a mat board. This involves selecting a slightly larger frame and adding a mat, which surrounds the image and creates that classic, centered border effect.
