One of my favorite minimalistic photographs taken during the "Identity" project, I am excited to share "LIGHT". There are two very obvious and impactful elements within this print. The first is the background. It's extremely polished, featuring a beautiful gradient that transitions from a soft, pale yellow to a slightly saturated blue. It is absolutely essential to this print. The second thing that stands out is, as I'm sure you've guessed, the lighthouse without its light on. It has a slight shadow on the front, as the sun is setting to its right. It creates a defining glow on its side that helps the lighthouse pop from the print. The lighthouse is also in sharp detail, showcasing every bolt and screw keeping the structure together. In the middle of the entire scene, whether you saw it or not, is a pigeon attempting to gain some rest on the lighthouse. It is but a small addition to the print and isn’t meant to be the main subject. Nevertheless, it adds character to the print in a way that I quite enjoy.

STORY

Out of the many photos that were taken during my first project in Duluth, “Identity”, this was one of the first. It stands strong as one of my favorites, as well as a turning point for my photography.

If you think about a lighthouse, what do they do? They help guide people. They help warn people.

In my case, this lighthouse helped guide me. It provided me with the perfect understanding of a specific theme I enjoyed shooting.

This theme, if you don’t already know, includes a sense of minimalism and evenly saturated colors. LIGHT naturally had each of those elements, as do most of my photos that fall into this theme.

The reason I say it was a turning point for me is that I had never shot anything like this before. I didn’t know how to frame for this feel; I didn’t know what my physical surroundings might need to look like for the right lighting; I didn’t even know what time of day would be best. But this photo, this print, was a uniquely and perfectly timed event, helping me to step into something new.

For you, getting a new sense of direction may come from anything. It may come from me saying that Jesus is my Lord or from someone else saying, “Contrast is the secret to everything.”

Border & Presentation Details

All prints are produced edge-to-edge, with no white border, allowing the image to fully occupy the space for a clean, modern presentation.

The only exception is Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth, which includes a 0.79" (20 mm) white border as part of its fine art presentation, enhancing its gallery-style aesthetic.

If you prefer a white border on other materials, this can be achieved through custom framing using a mat board. This involves selecting a slightly larger frame and adding a mat, which surrounds the image and creates that classic, centered border effect.
