The prayer wheel - the subject of this art piece - is the focus of the town. It was around the time that I took this photograph in the small but touristic location that I realized how significant religion was.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Tibetans believe that the flags they hang, the wheels they spin, and the beads they shuffle send up prayers to the gods. Their belief and their commitment to said belief are being declared through the simple presence of this prayer wheel. Its size is immense, it's painted a rich gold, which contrasts with the nature that surrounds it, its detail is exquisite, and it sits, as I said, in the center of town. Many people will travel to this temple to practice, strengthen, and add to their beliefs: rebirth, karma, merit, etc.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile the temple itself isn't the literal reward, it stands up as a basis of a Tibetan Buddhist's goal. It is peaceful, like they desire to be peaceful; it is spacious, like they desire their minds to be spacious, and so on and so on. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis photograph is meant to capture the limit of the rewards we can receive as mere humans. No matter how tall we build our foundations, we cannot touch dimensional heavens. No matter how beautiful our decorations are, they cannot cut through space-time. It moves towards the center of the frame and pulls the eye with it. It almost appears as if it's moving. The vibrant and various paints that are used to paint the inclines on both the top and bottom sections of the roofs provide a beautiful contrast and important detail to the photograph. Slightly dulling the full liveliness of the paint is a net that covers the lower portions of each roof. We are surrounded by people who have a set of norms, whether good or bad, and when we spend time with them, we slowly start to reflect the world's characters. There are those who study in college because their friends were following that path. Some people are forced to pick up a religion because the pressure from their family is too great. We are exhibited as the product of someone else's work. This isn't to say that exploring isn't okay, of course. There is nothing wrong with that, and there are certainly many instances where this person is better off because of that decision. The contrast is that there are times when people don't get to explore their full sets of options. I believe that it is vital for us, as human beings, to be considerate of how others affect us and how we impact those around us.
